Longbing Cao holds a PhD in Computing Science and another PhD in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems. He is a professor at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. He has been promoting Data Science and Advanced Analytics research, education, development and engagement since he was a Chief Technology Officer and after he joined academia in 2005. He initiates and focuses on new research directions inspired by significant real-life big data challenges, such as non-IID data learning, behaviour informatics, and actionable knowledge discovery.

He established the world first research degrees: Master of Analytics (Research) and PhD: Analytics, IEEE Task Force on Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA), IEEE Task Force on Behavioral, Economic and Socio-cultural Computing, IEEE Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics (IEEE DSAA), International Journal of Data Science and Analytics with Springer (JDSA), and the Big Data Summit in Sydney, and organized several data mining events including KDD2015 in Sydney.

He is the founding director of UTS’s research institute: Advanced Analytics Institute, which demonstrates a model of bridging the gaps between research, education and real problem solving of big data analytics. His team has successfully delivered many large analytical projects for federal and state government units and large business organizations in Australia and overseas, which have resulted in significant dollar savings and strong social impact, as mentioned in government, industry, media and OECD reports.
