报告1: A Flexible Data Center Network Architecture
特邀讲者:Kai Chen
Kai Chen is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include networks and networked systems, with current emphasis on data center networking and cloud computing. He has published his research work in top-notch conferences and journals like ACM SIGCOMM, USENIX NSDI, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, and especially one of his papers was nominated for ACM SIGCOMM Best Paper. He is particularly interested in finding simple yet deep and elegant solutions to practical challenging problems that generate real-world impacts.
报告提要:
Nowadays, data centers are being built around the world to support various infrastructure services and Internet/cloud applications. How to design a sustainable network architecture is a fundamental challenge for data center research. In this talk, I will introduce OSA - a flexible optical switching architecture for data center networks. At its core, by exploiting runtime reconfigurable optical devices, OSA flexibly adapts its topology and link capacities to various traffic patterns and thus achieves high network bisection bandwidth. The key idea I hope to deliver through OSA is that: a thin but flexible architecture, instead of a static fat one, can better support data center networking in a simple, power-efficient and cost-effective way. We have evaluated and validated our system through extensive analysis, simulations and prototype implementations.

He is an assistant professor at School of Computer @ National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), China. He got the PhD and graduated from NUDT in 2008. He published more than 20 papers (as the first author) in important Journals and Conferences including IEEE J-SAC, IEEE T-KDE, IEEE INFOCOM, ICDCS, ICWS, and USENIX HotCloud. Recently he got some important awards including:
- Outstanding Dissertation Award, awarded by China Computer Federation (CCF) to the top 10 dissertations chosen nationally, Jan. 2011
- Distinguished Chinese Student Scholarship, granted by the Chinese Ministry of Education and HP to the top 12 PhD students chosen nationally, Jul. 2008
报告提要:
Current standalone VMs have to build a monolithic image statically linking all required libraries and user program at compilation time. In contrast, we propose to use a dynamic and modular way to building standalone VMs, where: Libraries are provided as shared objects (.so files) and not linked into the standalone VM image. At runtime a standalone VM uses split driver model to ask dom0 or a specific LibDom to load/map/link required libraries for it. Benefits include (1) Efficient memory usage; (2) Separate development/deployment; and (3) Flexible VM control.
