简介: We are living a rapidly changing digital world where we are inundated by an ocean of data that is being generated at a rate of 2.5 billion GB every single day! It is projected that by 2017 humans will have generated 16 trillion GB digital data. This phenomenal growth and ubiquity of data has ushered in an era of “Big Data”, which brings with it new challenges as well as opportunities. In this talk, I will first discuss big data challenges facing and opportunities for computer and storage systems research, with an emphasis on challenges and research questions brought on by the almost unfathomable volumes of data, namely, research questions dealing with data reduction in face of big data. I will then present some recent solutions proposed by my research group that seek to address the performance and space issues facing big data and data-intensive applications by means of data reduction.
